It has been a while since I've posted anything. I have 3 good reasons and they all include my boys! The best thing about my Scentsy business is that I can step back and take a break when needed.

This spring we got really busy with sports - all 3 boys were involved in 3 different teams. And as soon as spring sports ended, we jumped into all-star baseball. Baseball and Cub Scout camps really began to take over, and of course the kids were out of school.

We're finishing out the summer as the boys head back to school and now I can start to focus on my business again. So if you're looking for a way to make some extra money that can work on YOUR TIME, contact me. I'd love to share how Scentsy allows me to do what I want when I want so that you can enjoy that same luxury.

During a moving presentation at Scentsy headquarters yesterday we heard inspiring stories from those who helped make our Love, Life, Hope Charitable Cause Warmer a tool for raising awareness, spreading hope, and providing much-needed funds toward finding a cure for breast cancer.

Idaho Business Review Women of the Year event breaks record

A hand-made chandelier twinkled like glittering diamonds over more than 500 people who gathered Feb. 17 to honor the Idaho Business Review’s Woman of the Year, Heidi Thompson.

The Idaho Business Review honored 50 women in this year’s event in a night of wine, food, music, dance, words of praise and awards.

“This is our sixth year for the Women of the Year event and it was our best ever,” said IBR Vice President and Publisher Sean Evans. “We truly enjoyed celebrating the success and triumphs of some of our state’s most successful women.”

A first this year came at the end of the evening in an Academy Award-like moment as Thompson, president and co-owner of Scentsy, Inc. - and one of the 50 honorees - was revealed as the 2011 Woman of the Year. A selection committee of past honorees used a rating system covering four critical categories, and Thompson scored highest across the board.

Thompson, whose rags-to-riches story could be fodder for a Hollywood movie script, smiled through tears as she accepted the award presented to her by Evans, keynote speaker Bethine Church and Dr. Bill Bach, from the University of Phoenix, presenting sponsor. She thanked her mother Alice Kalilimoku, her children, Sarah, Mary, Emma, Owen and Grace and especially her husband, and “best friend,” Orville. Other family members, friends and coworkers were there to share the celebration.

The Boise Centre’s ballroom was lit by a periwinkle-hued chandelier the size of an SUV that was brought in especially for the event.

“Building all of the custom pieces to present the glamour and style of Hollywood during the event, and remain under budget was difficult,” said Danielle Snelson, owner of Joie Events of Boise.”It had to be light enough to hang from the ceiling, but exotic enough to be chic.”

The chandelier is made with a carbon frame and fabric with lighting.

“It’s classy, with the old Hollywood style,” she said. “We wanted to bring a part of the vintage glamour to Boise for one night.”

Other event firsts included commissioned handcrafted awards individually created for all 50 honorees by glass artist Zion Warne. The Frim Fram 4 provided toe-tapping jazz numbers and the venerable Mrs. Church shared some advice her mother had given her: Work hard and you can accomplish anything.

The big takeaway for the night: 50 Women of the Year - and each with her own story to tell. Read them all in the IBR pullout magazine in today’s publication.

“Every one of these 50 women of the year exemplifies what it takes to be a leader, deeply involved in her community, an accomplished professional who can and does follow through on long-term goals,” Evans said.

InTENsity Convention 2010

I was able to go attend the annual Scentsy Convention in Denver Colorado. I am constantly amazed at the caliber of people I meet through my business with Scentsy. We have team members all over the United States and I was able to rub elbows with some of the top sellers in our team from California, Ohio, South Dakota, Florida, etc.

Over 6000 consultants attended Convention this year - which is over double what attended last year in Salt Lake City. We had sneak peeks of what is coming this Fall/Winter - and we even got some FREE product to take home and show off to our team members and customers.

Not only did we have big gatherings of all 6000 of us, but we also had the opportunity to break off into workshops. I took so many notes and had many AHA moments that I look forward to implement in my business.

My children really want a puppy. They don't seem to understand that it takes money to buy one, and then they have to visit the vet. Plus, since we don't have any puppy paraphernalia, we'd have to buy a bed, bowls, a collar, a leash, etc.

I think it's about time that we add a new member to the family too. I've been searching for breeders and doing my homework. I am also motivated to book a few more parties and add to my sales so that I can earn a little more money to set aside for a cute little pup.

Easter Sunday Flame

We spent Easter Sunday with some good friends of ours - eating, talking, laughing and goofing off. It was a load of fun and was a very enjoyable day for our entire family (I hope it was as fun for our friends too!)o

Our youngest still likes to take his blankie with him when we're gone for hours at a time. He was wrapping himself in it and walking in front of my hubby and me. On the coffee table in front of us was a candle with the flame blazing. (My good friend hasn't gotten her first Scentsy warmer yet as she's trying to get a couple of free ones by currently hosting a basket party!) Little Man nearly caused his blankie to go up in flames!

I'm grateful that I don't have to worry with that! I'm also glad that my friend will be using Scentsy very soon as she has 3 dogs and a cat that could easily have tails blazing if they aren't careful!!!

This coming week marks my anniversary with Scentsy. I have really appreciated my journey so far. I thought I'd share a little more about myself and why this "job" is so important to me.

When I was pregnant with my first child, the plan my husband and I had was for me to work while he went to school full time and we would have a good friend provide day care. That idea was a winner for about 2 months after my son entered the world. I didn't realize the impact he would have on my life and the responsibility I would feel to be the nurturing one in his life - especially the early years. So I quit my job and my hubby worked full time while attending school full time. And before he graduated we had 2 children!

He got a job right out of school and we moved to a much more expensive area than we were used to. It took a lot of adjusting and budgeting but I was still able to stay home with my children.

Now I'm not saying that staying home has been easy! There are days when I'd like to poke my eyeballs out and go running and screaming far from the home. But as I've persevered through the years, my children have started going to school and my days are not as hectic as they once were.

I still have one little guy at home. He begins preschool in the fall. And preschool is one of the reasons I started with Scentsy. Since we bought our home a couple of years ago, finances are snug. That said, I didn't see a way to send the little one to preschool like we did his brothers. Thankfully I now have a way to make extra money each month to provide him that opportunity.

My goal with Scentsy is simple: Build my business so that I may have a little extra to offer my family while still providing me the opportunity to always be in my kids' lives!

My family is most important to me. The Scentsy opportunity has provided me a tool to be my own boss and make my own schedule to work around my children and their activities. I have also met so many other wonderful women (and men) that want the same for their families. In the picture above, you see Orville and Heidi Thompson. They are a wonderful couple that loves their own family very dearly. Through much sacrifice they have provided much more for their family than they ever dreamed. Their love and dedication to their own family is reflected in the Scentsy company so that we as consultants may have that same dedication to our own families.

At first I purchased my Scentsy warmer and scents to support my dear friend in her new business venture. It wasn't long after that I realized I had made a very "scentsible" purchase! I haven't used Scentsy for very long, but it sure has made a difference in my house in the just three months that I have.
We live in an old apartment that, at times, can smell musty and damp. Add to that two kids and a husband, and you get some interesting smells! I've always loved the smell of candles-- all types. I had vanilla, pineapple, apple, etc. I loved having scents for every season. But candles don't last for very long. You light it up, let it sit and permeate the air for a few hours, and most of the candle is gone. So then you have to go to the store and buy yet another candle so your house doesn't smell like funk!
And THEN... I got a Scentsy warmer for Christmas. And three different scents! Hallelujah! This has been the answer to all my odorous problems! It takes just the right amount of time to heat up and melt the wax. And then, the scent isn't crazy overpowering like other waxes I've tried in the past. It refreshes my house in minutes and lasts for hours and hours.
I'm so grateful for Scentsy and the wonderful products they make. It helps me feel like my old, musty apartment is more of my home. I love walking in to a great smelling place!

Do you notice any soot when burning candles? Ever thought that you are breathing it in? Check out this information from chimneykeepers.com.

Reports of sooting in homes from candle use have been increasing in recent years. Candles are a $2.3 billion per year industry growing at 10-15% per year.

"Airborne soot particles caused from burning candles eventually collide with other particles," says Dr. Jesse La Prade, an Alabama Cooperative Extension environmental specialist. "As particles grow in size from these airborne collisions, they are eventually forced by gravity to settle on tables, counters and other surfaces throughout the home."

"Due to the lack of air exchange, burning a single candle a week in a tight, well-insulated home can cause very worrisome wall darkening," according to Jeffrey C. May, a professional home inspector in Cambridge, MA.

Soot is distributed by air currents in the home and is deposited in certain areas due to attractive forces including temperature, humidity and static charges.

Damage can be expensive. "Some homeowners have spent as much as $80,000 to clean and replace household furnishings that have been marred by candle soot," says Ron Bailey, owner of Bailey Engineering Corp., a Palm Beach Gardens, FL, indoor air quality engineering firm. Heating and air conditioning systems can be damaged, too. Entire systems, including air ducts, may need to be replaced. Extensive damage has been reported with just a few hours of candle burning.

Is the Scentsy product new to you? Here are some frequently asked questions that may help you understand a bit more about it all.

What kind of wax does Scentsy use?

Scentsy uses a food-grade petroleum based wax. This wax allows for maximum scent loading ability, low melt point and firmness.

How long will Scentsy bars last?

They will last a minimum of 80 hours. However some fragrances have lasted longer. It depends on the strength of the fragrance.

How hot does the wax get when warmed?

The wax will get to just above body temperature, so it won't burn or harm anyone.

How do I clean the wax out of the warmer?

While the wax is warmed and melted, pour it back into its original container if there is scent left or into a lined garbage ca if the scent is used up. While the cup is still warm, wipe it out with a paper towel.

What wattage of light bulb does the warmer use?

Full size warmers use a standard 25-watt candelabra base light bulb. Mid size warmers use 20-watt bulbs. And plug-ins use 15-watt bulbs. I provide bulbs for all of my customers. Should you need a replacement, please contact me.

Does the warmer come with a light bulb?

Yes, all warmers include a light bulb with purchase.

How long can I leave my warmer on?

As long as you feel comfortable leaving it on. Think of it as a lamp.

How long should I keep my party open?

About 3-5 days is the longest you should leave a party open. Leaving it open any longer will delay delivery of products to customers.

Do I pay shipping and handling?

If the party reaches $150, there is no shipping charge on any orders shipped to you the hostess, or to the consultant.

Can a customer ship products directly to them, or someone else?

Yes, if someone wants to ship their product to an address other than the hostess/consultant address, it costs 10% of the product subtotal.

Do I pay tax on shipping and handling?

No. Just on the product amount.

What amount is the hostess benefits calculated on?

Just the product totals, before tax and shipping.

How long until delivery?

Approximately 2 weeks from the time the party CLOSES.

How do I earn 1/2 price booking bonuses?

When one of your guests/customers books a party from your party, you will receive a 1/2 price item on your order you place at their party.

Why I love Scentsy

I love when my house smells good! I used to just light candles but once I had kids I realized that I didn't want them to get burned or to learn how to light a match by watching me do it. I them got a candle warmer. I liked that because there wasn't a flame, but it seemed to take forever to get to the point where the wax was melted and I could enjoy it. I was also concerned with the kids bumping it and getting hot wax on them. I started using Scentsy about 7 months ago and love it! I like that there isn't a flame and that because the squares are so small it doesn't take long to melt and start to smell good. Also I like the convenient breakable squares. The different scents stack so nicely (as apposed to my closet full of different sized candles). I like that I can change the scent whenever I want. With candles I felt like I needed to melt the entire thing before moving on, mostly because then I would need to find a place to store it. I love the variety of smells. I have so many favorites!

I love that on days when my kids have pulled out every toy they own, I need to do laundry, wash dishes, and try to decide what to eat for dinner, I can sit down, close my eyes, and enjoy the fact that at least my house smells really, really good!

Candles, safe?

Have you ever lit a candle and thought to yourself, "I'm gonna remember that this is going so I can blow it out soon"? Well, then have you forgotten what you told yourself and came back to find a puddle of wax still burning??? I don't know how many times that happened to me. I also recall waking up in the middle of the night and seeing a flicker of light in the bathroom. Yikes! I forgot to blow the candle out!

And then we had children come along... At first we couldn't keep anything burning in the house because they would fight over blowing it out. As if it was someone's birthday, I could never keep anything burning due to little people blowing them out!

Now those children are bigger and love to play with fire. What kept my 8 and 6-year olds busy while camping this summer? Playing in the fire!!! So now it's more of a hazard to keep a candle burning as I don't know when someone might stick something in the flame to see if it burns too.

Thankfully I discovered Scentsy. It's too boring without a flame, so my boys leave it alone. The wax doesn't burn if it spills, so I don't worry of anyone getting burned. And if I leave it on by accident, it becomes a night light that won't burn the house down!!!

Scentsy Plug-ins

A great way to warm your bathroom or other small room with great fragrance.

Scentsy plug-ins use a 15-watt bulb to warm the fragrant wax and an on/off switch for easy control. Your plugs aren't all in the upright position? No worries! The plug portion of the plug-in rotates to fit any outlet.

To remove the wax from your plug in, turn to the off position for approximately 10 minutes. Wax will be more solidified and easy to scoop out of the cup to dispose of. Wipe with a paper towel and start again.

Why is Scentsy wax so great?

For one, it's a softer wax to ensure more fragrance as well as meltability. Once you've used our wax, you'll notice it packs a lot of punch for the size. Many may look at the size of a bar and think the burn time would be minimal, but on the contrary a single bar can last 60-80 burn hours.

It's also safe. Should you spill melted Scentsy wax on yourself it will not burn. Like all paraffin waxes, ours melts at a lower temperature so that it will not burn if touched.

It never burns away. Unlike most candles and scented waxes, Scentsy wax does not burn away or dissipate into the air. Have you ever wondered where the wax goes when a candle burns? I'm guessing our lungs since we breathe the same air it's dissipating into. With Scentsy wax, only the fragrance burns out of it. Once the scent is gone you can just dump the old wax out and start anew.

I first really learned about Scentsy while participating in a holiday open house. I was promoting a different company and had my booth set up close to a Scentsy consultant. We got to talking about our different products and I learned that she had once sold from the same company that I was selling with at the time. We seemed to have a lot in common.

I started asking her more about Scentsy... but not just about the product. I wanted to know about the company; how long had it been around? Who thought of this great idea? How much commission did the consultants get? The more I asked, the more I wanted to know. I thought it was such a smart product.

A few years ago our family bought our first home... a small town home. One night we were awakened by a strange sound and when we went to investigate we learned it was a fire in our wall. Thankfully we caught it early and were able to take care of matters in a timely manner. We didn't lose our home or anything extreme like that, but we had thousands of dollars of damage and had to deal with insurance issues. It could have been a true nightmare.

Since then we have been quite cautious about things. Any time we go on vacation my husband travels to every room and unplugs EVERYTHING. I rarely burned candles anymore because of the worry of it tipping over or causing a fire another way. Plus we have 3 active boys that LOVE fire and won't leave candles alone, thus creating a new worry.

I have always aspired to a comfortable home. I want our friends and family - and even strangers - to feel relaxed and welcome in our home. Part of creating that atmosphere is achieved through scent. When I decided to cut back on candles, I felt our home wasn't quite as "warm". Thankfully Scentsy solved our problems. Because the lightbulbs are in such low wattage, we don't worry of them burning too hot to cause a problem with the warmers. My husband even allows our plug-ins to go all night in the bathrooms allowing a night light for anyone needing it. My home is always smelling great since I can leave my warmers plugged in all day. And the scents last so long!

Before when I would burn a candle, I felt I could smell it for only a short time. Every time I lit it, the scent got duller. But now with Scentsy wax, I don't worry about waining scents. Our home smells good ALL the time. Now I feel I have the warm and inviting atmosphere for all that walk through our door.

Now as a consulant I can share this great product with others through parties. I love spending time with people to show what Scentsy can do for their homes. I can also give those looking for a hobby or a little extra money a way to achieve just that. And while I have fun sharing the Scentsy Spirit, I earn extra money that allows my family to live a little more comfortably.

Scentsy Bars

Scentsy bars are made from a soft wax that allows for the maximum amount of scent to be held within. Using a softer wax allows for the heat of our warmers to melt it completely, but never burn it away. Our Scentsy bars come in over 80 scents and each bar will last between 50 and 80 hours of 'on time' in your Scentsy warmer. Some may even last longer!

Scentsy Warmers
